Our values
Sustainability without compromise
At Flores à Beira-Rio, preserving flowers also means preserving the planet. No petrochemical resins, no industrial silica — only handcrafted botanical pressing with museum-conservation materials.
Artisanal, natural, local.
To last for decades.
When we receive flowers from a meaningful moment, the responsibility is not only artistic — it is also environmental.
That is why we choose, and will continue to choose, handcrafted botanical pressing as our exclusive working method. It is a slower and more demanding technique, but the results speak for themselves: natural beauty, longevity, and a process that respects the integrity of the flower and the planet.
The packaging that
tells a story
Part of the packaging that protects your frame is handmade by the users of the Weaving and Sewing Workshop of the Coimbra Cerebral Palsy Association, under the Mão Doida brand.
Direct and ongoing impact
Every order directly supports the work and autonomy of the users of the Coimbra Cerebral Palsy Association. This is not a one-off initiative — it is part of our business model.
Designed to be reused
The bag that protects your frame can afterwards be used to store clothes, beach items, or whatever fits.
Pressing, resin
and silica
The three most popular methods for preserving flowers forever. Here is why we choose pressing.
Botanical Pressing
Handcrafted. Natural.
100% natural, no solvents, no emissions.
Flowers retain their real, organic essence.
No exposure to harmful chemicals.
100% mechanical process. Generates no toxic waste.
Biodegradable materials at end of useful life.
The most sustainable and careful choice for the flowers and the planet.
Epoxy Resin
Encapsulated petrochemical plastic.
Synthetic polymer derived from petroleum, not biodegradable.
Releases toxic VOCs during curing and production.
Remains in the environment for hundreds of years.
Difficult or impossible to restore if damaged.
Requires strict PPE: chemical vapour filter mask, nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
Harmful to health and the environment.
Silica Gel
Industrial.
Industrial production with high energy consumption.
Versions with cobalt chloride are toxic to aquatic life.
Requires a mask during handling.
Air-drying is an alternative, but does not preserve original colours, so we do not consider it a comparable professional preservation method.
Technically interesting, ecologically questionable.
What makes each piece
truly sustainable
Local framing
Frames are made by a local Portuguese framing workshop, using high-quality lacquered wood and materials. Each frame is produced to measure for the piece it will hold.
Local art in every detail
We support local Portuguese artists who created the graphic elements of our brand, including the card included in packaging and the gift voucher.
Zero aggressive chemicals
Botanical pressing uses no solvents, resins or synthetic substances. The process combines pressure, controlled heat and time. Nothing is added to the flower.
Packaging designed to be reused
We aim for most packaging elements to have a second life, and for the minimum necessary waste to be discarded immediately.
Integrated social impact
Every order directly supports the work and autonomy of the users of the Coimbra Cerebral Palsy Association. It is not a one-off action — it is part of our business model.
Museum UltraVue® UV70 glass
The same glass used in museums and galleries. Filters 70% of UV rays and eliminates glare, keeping colours vibrant for decades.
The plastic we still use
To ensure your frame arrives in perfect condition, we still use inflatable padding to protect the glass. We are actively testing 100% sustainable alternatives.
